Newbie Guide
From Hypercube
Death, wimpy, and consider Page 1
IMPORTANT: You can lose levels by dying. If you die, your corpse stays where you died. If you complete this tutorial, you will get a token that you can give to a friendly immortal in exchange for them recovering your corpse. Spend it carefully - you only get one! See Death.
Use CONSIDER to get more information about whether you can kill a creature. Setting WIMPY makes you automatically try to FLEE if you drop too many hit points.
To set WIMPY, type: WIMPY
Movements, weather, dates, and landmarks Page 2
Movement commands are NORTH, SOUTH, EAST, WEST, UP and DOWN. Like most commands they can be abbreviated: N, S, E, W, U and D. Moving around costs MOVEMENT points. FLY spells make movement cost less. Difficult terrain and WEATHER can make it cost more. Having a MOUNT also makes movement easier.
To see how the WEATHER is, type: WEATHER
To see what month it is, type: DATE
To find famous areas, use the TRACK command to locate LANDMARKS.
Attributes Page 3
ATTRIBUTES are the physical and mental qualities of your character that dictate how good you are at various activities. There are ten attributes: STRENGTH, DEXTERITY, REFLEX, CONSTITUTION, STAMINA, INTELLIGENCE, INTUITION, PERCEPTION, PRESENCE and WARFARE.
To learn what they do, type: HELP ATTRIBUTES
To learn what your attributes are, type: ATTRIBUTES
Practice, gain, and train Page 4
When you have enough experience to raise a level, not only can you wear more powerful items, you gain one train, and several practices. Trains are spent to improve attributes, improve mana, hit points and movement points, or GAIN new skills or spell groups. Practices are spent to improve your ability at skills or spells, or can be saved and converted into trains. You can only spend trains and practices in the presence of masters, but you can check your abilities anywhere. To see a list of your spells, type: SPELLS To see how good you are at skills and spells, type: PRACTICE To see this information in graph form, type: PRACTICE GRAPH
To learn more on these topics, including the best stats to train, type: HELP PRACTICE HELP TRAIN HELP GAIN
Scores, prompt, report, and worth Page 5
SCORE shows how much experience you've gained, how many trains and practices you have, what your current hit points, mana and move are, and various data. WORTH shows just a few key stats, and REPORT reports this to other players in the same room. PROMPT is customizable to show as much (or little) information as you want to keep current.
To learn how to customize your prompt, type: HELP PROMPT
Food, drink, rest, and sleep Page 6
Being hungry or thirsty makes you recover more slowly. Resting makes you recover more quickly. Sleeping makes you recover quickest of all but makes you the most vulnerable. Usually sleeping on a bed or blanket, or even at a sacred flag, makes you recover faster also.
Skills and spells Page 7
Casting spells costs MANA. When you first get a spell it costs a lot of mana. As you gain levels it costs less until it reaches minimum cost. For more information see help CAST and help SPELLS. Also, type: SPELLS
Skills have individual helps. To read them type: HELP skillname, such as HELP BASH, HELP TAN or HELP DODGE.
Alignment, churches, and portal Page 8
If your god is specifically good or evil, you must take care to not drift further than IMPARTIAL alignment or you may find your spellcasting and skills failing. Also, if you are a warrior or cleric, you always require a holy symbol to cast spells.
Once you leave the newbie area of the Academy, you recall to your church. Your church has very important portals to the center of the city of Bel Arethuse and the Holy Grove, where you TRAIN. It also has a DONATION area. Be sure to explore your church very carefully as often things are not as straightforward as they appear. Sere's church, for example, is in the back rooms of a restaurant.
You may EXAMINE a portal to see what is on the other side. Finally, a portal may be any object, it is not necessarily called "portal". It may be, for example, a ring of fire.
Money and banks Page 9
Gold and silver are heavy, and easily stolen. You can PILE it to hide it in a bag, or DEPOSIT it in a bank. In Bel Arethuse, you can track a landmark at First Isevain Interplanar.
One of the easiest ways to get money is to SELL items to a shop. Bel Arethuse has over a hundred shops, with wide ranges of weapons, armor, food and magic items.
Channels Page 10
Syntax: gossip <message> Syntax: yell <message>
Hint is a one-way channel on which you receive hints about how to play the mud. Type HINT to turn it off or on.
Gossip is a global channel into which you can enter a message which will be seen by anyone else in the game with the channel on. '.' is a synonym for gossip. Gossip is a general purpose channel for any and all purposes. Roleplay is permitted on gossip, but the Declaim channel should generally be used.
Q/A or the question/answer channels are where all questions of any sort should be directed. Questions do not belong in gossip!
Grats is where you should notify people that you have levelled or otherwise increased your abilities, or congratulate them for such an increase. Gossip is not a suitable location for such!
Yell sends a message to all awake players within your area. Try to use it sparingly/within reason.
Music is exclusively for the purpose of quoting parts of songs.
Rules Page 11
No cheating.
No harrassment.
No multiplaying.
Minimal clean language, politeness and common sense will be enforced.
Subrule:
This is not a democracy. This is a Tyranny. You are owed nothing.
Player-run organizations and having your own base Page 12
Any player who reaches level 10 may pay 100 gold for permission to build personal areas. See help EXPANSION for details on further costs.
Any player who reaches level 15 may found an order. See help ORGANIZATION for details and limitations.
