General

Q. Why can't I hold/wear/use a certain item?

A. It is probably due to racial restrictions. For example: Aeries cannot wear shoulder armor, and elves cannot use iron weapons.

Q. Why do I keep getting disconnected?

A. After a period of inactivity your character will 'disappear into the void.' This is a type of warning that you've been inactive for a while. After a certain amount of time after that, you'll be logged out of the MUD automatically. Being able to stay logged on indefinitely is a privilege that Immortals enjoy.

Q. Who are better at fighting: Clerics or Thieves?

A. While clerics have better spells, thieves have a higher hit probability and higher HP.

Q. Will wielding lock picks increase my lock picking ability?

A. No. At least not directly.

Q. What affects alignment change?

A. Level of the mob and alignment of the mob. If you attack a high level evil creature it will make you good faster than attacking low level evil creatures. The same is true in reverse.

Trains and Practices

Q. How do I get more practices when I level up?

A. The higher your primary attributes for your class are, the more practices you get per level. See Train.

Q. What is the maximum number of practices? Is it tied to level?

A. The theoretical maximum is 8. This is unrelated to level, except that being higher level allows you higher practice-gain related stats.

Spells

Q. What affects spell damage: level, or level of skill at it?

A. Level.

Q. Do stats affect spells?

A. Only conjuration and beguiling spells. Your presence dictates how many minions you can control.

Q. Does your skill in a skill or spell affect how much damage you do with it?

A. No.

Q. Can permanancy be used on a light source to make the duration last forever?

A. As of Fall 2005, yes.

Q. Do the spells 'Armor' and 'Shield' stack their effects?

A. Yes.

Builder

Q. How do I make a mob unkillable?

A. Type in 'mob <vnum> off + noncom'

Q. What's the difference between the long, short, and desc object flags?

A. The long flag is for what a person sees when they enter the room. For example: A still-beating human heart lies here. The short flag is for what it will look like held or in your inventory. For example: a still-beating human heart. And finally the desc flag is for what happens when you examine the item. For example: This used to belong to some poor sucker. It's so fresh it's still beating.

Q. How do you link rooms?

A. Type in 'room exit direction <vnum>'

Q. How do I make the room description text match the rest of the MUD?

A. Type 'room desc align'

Q. Do I have enough vnum's to create everything I want?

A. Actually there's 3 parallel sets. Objects mobs and rooms all have there own set. So essential if you are given 100 vnum, you get that many for each set.

Q. How do you see what flags are on a particular obj/mob/room?

A. type 'stat obj <vnum>' or 'stat mob <vnum>' or 'stat room <vnum>'

Q. How do we make something so that a mob can wield it?

A. Type 'obj vnum wear + held right left either'

Q. Why can't Mobs use my item? Also, what does 'is not substantial enough to use' mean?

A. Mobs and players can't use gear in a non-live (or "virtual") area, as a security measure. It was not always this way, but it only takes one big jerk to spoil it for everyone else...

Q. How do we get our object to say 'something something lies here?'

A. Type 'obj <vnum> long <description>'

Q. What is a good weight for an object to be?

A. Weights are set in tenths of pounds. Unless an item is to be weightless, it should be at least 1. Swords and other one-handed weapons are usually 2-4 pounds.

Q. What are container capacity, max and multiplier?

A. Container capacity dictates the heaviest an item can be and still fit through the mouth of the container. Container max is the total weight the container can carry. Container multiplier is a percentage for how much the weight of an item is reduced or increased.

Q. How do I view a list of all the possible flags and extras?

A. To view a list of flags you would use the "?" key. For example 'room flag ?' or 'room extra ?'. This also applies for mobs and objects. However not all flag fields are just called flag. Because there is no 'obj flag' or 'mob flag' per se, but obj type ?, mob off ?, etc.
